Microsoft isn’t afraid to throw big bucks around to get what it wants. And since the company wants in on the digital media market, at some point it may make sense for Microsoft to splurge and buy Netflix, say analysts — especially if the company hopes to effectively compete against Apple and Adobe.
“Microsoft is always interested in acquiring eyeballs for its own online initiatives,” says Christopher Hickey, an analyst with Atlantic Equities. “Although I don’t think anything would happen until Netflix has an online-only business model.”
In the meantime, Microsoft and Netflix are already pretty tight. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings sits on Microsoft’s board. Earlier this year, the companies partnered up to make Netflix streaming available through the Xbox 360. The latest development in their alliance: Netflix announced Monday it will make content available to stream on Microsoft’s Silverlight video player, both on PCs and on Macs. (The company has long been promised to make streaming services available to Mac users by the end of 2008.)
And as further evidence of their increasingly friendly relationship: Netflix was probably not paid off by Microsoft to go with the Silverlight video player, according to analysts. By contrast, when Microsoft reached a similar arrangement with NBC to stream the Olympics on Silverlight, Microsoft reportedly paid NBC up the tooth for it.
“I would say that Netflix’s relationship with Microsoft extends beyond Silverlight — I don’t think Microsoft would make a cash payment to Netflix,” says Mark Harding, an analyst at Maxim Group.
Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey says the company reviewed Silverlight since May 2007, and ultimately went with it because it’s a “faster, better way to stream movies on your PC.”
The partnership also helps Microsoft effectively compete against Adobe and Apple, both of which are vying for respective pieces of the digital media market. Microsoft’s release of Silverlight looked like a full-on assault on Adobe’s Flash media player when the company launched it last year. Still, Adobe has much of the market and Microsoft is playing catchup. For Microsoft, the Netflix deal could help get Silverlight downloaded onto the PCs of Netflix’s 8.7 million subscribers.
“It’s a bit of a land grab [for Adobe and Microsoft] right now, and because it’s so competitive, it limits the profitability of the market” says Christopher Hickey, an analyst at Atlantic Equities. “Microsoft will do whatever it takes to gain market share, even if that means destroying the economics of the opportunity.”
But if Microsoft wanted to, it could gobble up Netflix pretty easily. The company is sitting on a mountain of money — $25 billion in cash and investments as of the end of September — and at last check, Netflix’s market capitalization was a little over $1.1 billion.
For Netflix, a Microsoft marriage might also help cut marketing expenses. As it stands now, one of Netflix’s biggest expenses is advertising or “subscriber acquisition costs.” Presumably if Netflix was folded into the Microsoft family, those costs would be dramatically reduced,

It appears that two of the Xbox 360 SKUs will receive a $50 price drop by the week of Sept. 7, making the 60GB model $299 and the Elite $399 — we’ve yet to hear any change on the $279 Arcade meanwhile, the Arcade will drop $80 to $199. A few of our retail contacts, some of whom have given us good intel in the past — and who all work for separate corporations — have sent us identical information regarding a price drop. Evidence of the Elite and Arcade price cut can be found in the gallery below featuring images sent us from the Sept. 7 Radio Shack flyer.
Update: Oh mercy, it’s been a long day. The Arcade is marked as $199 in the flyer as well (under the TV, to the left). Thanks, Strike Man.
Looks Like 360 Dropping Prices again.. Lets hope they need to stop this red lights shit and keep it going!
I have finally experienced actually installing RAM memory on my father’s HP computer. It was a first for me but I came away from that with more experience. I know now how to install memory on desktops. It is so easy, at least that was the impression I had before I actually did it. To be fair it is probably the most easiest thing to install internally in a desktop computer then anything else.
Trust me I made mistakes during installing. I even thought I had screwed my dad by breaking his computer. I will try and type all the details of what I did so incase you are planning on or are doing a memory install you can look at my mistakes and not do them. First off, I will post the video I used to help me as a guide…
^That’s for a HP brand computer. Of course it can apply to any brand or you can simply find one on youtube that applies to your brand of computer.
Open your tower up. Make sure you touch a doorknob before performing any installation in your computer. It will save you from static electricity damage. You are inside. Looks for your memory slot. You might have one or two RAM memories. Take them out by releasing the two white snaps on the left and right side of the memory slots. These secure the memory in place. That’s important to remmeber and I will tell you why later. Ok after that unpack your new memory you wish to install, if you haven’t already done so.
Match up the bottom ends of your new memory to the slots. Now this is where I went wrong. Make sure you push the memory down hard (but not too hard it will break it). You must do so until the white snaps snaps down on the side of the memory where a little part is cut out. Not making sure it’s secure in the slot will cause many problems. Which I encountered. These problems can be power not going to the moniter, power not starting up at all. If you turn on your computer and it beeps two or three times that means the memory isn’t securely in place. Trust me thinking you broke you computer will make you go crazy. So just make sure you securely push it down til those snaps snap into place. From there you are all done. Just put everything back together and you are ready to go.
My father has been enjoying a faster computer experience ever since. And hgopefully you will be too. And if you are curious as to where to buy some memory. I have bought from premiummemory.com and they are very trusted by me. That’s all for now. Peace.
I know how many computer type of problems can be down right frustrating at times when you experience them. More so when you have gone to tech support sites that either offer help for free or for a small amount "donation". Maybe it will work and in some cases it doesn’t help jack shit.
I recently ran into a problem with my Sony Vaio laptop (yeah a hand me down from my brother who moved to NY last year). Anyways, I would get choppy video where ever I went be it Youtube, Dailymotion, ect. I would even get choppy video when I straight downloaded the full file to my HDD. So yeah I like almost anyone in need of help serached google and went to many tech support boards. I got a few amount of support but not FIX. This was like maybe 8 or 9 weeks ago. Then I started experiencing extreme heat om the wrist parts of the laptop, the touch mouse, and the back end. I didn’t know what to do. I then stumble upon a site suggesting a check of dust near or around the fan. Long behold to keep the story short I followed the directions (to a ceratin point because I didn’t have any compressed air cans around). I cleaned the circulation near and around the fan that you could see clumps of dust and dirty. I used a simple cotton q-tip and cleaned as best as I could.
Usually you wouldn’t know the difference but I did. Immeditately my whole laptop cooled down very fast. The air flow seemed to be going to where it was suppose to be going to. I haven’t had a problem with overheating and the surprise bonus. Videos don’t play choppy and work like the machine was just bought new. It really helped. So there you go my tech tip of the day. If you have a laptop and experienced either overheating and/or choppy video playback please check out this article!!! This is a good read and may just help you cure what is wrong with your laptop. That’s all folks!
Wii Fit is a video game developed by Nintendo for the Wii console. Previously revealed under the name Wii Health Pack, it was announced under its current title at Nintendo’s E3 press conference on July 11, 2007 by famed video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
At Nintendo’s media briefing, it was demonstrated by Miyamoto, Reggie Fils-Aime and other participants. Like the rest of the Wii Series, Wii Fit integrates Miis into its presentation and gameplay. An exercise game, Wii Fit consists primarily of exercise activities utilizing the Wii Balance Board peripheral.
Wii Fit was released in Japan on December 1, 2007, in Europe on April 25, 2008,[2] May 8, 2008 in Australia[3] and May 21, 2008 in North America.[4] In North America, Wii Fit was launched on May 19, 2008 with an exclusive release at the Nintendo World Store in New York City.[4]. New Zealand’s release was delayed until May 29, 2008, although EB Games there sold the game from the original release date of May 8, 2008, having bypassed the local distributor.
My Review
i think think this is very good. for people who don’t like to workout or too tired or hate the gym this is a good replacement. after playing the first day i worked up a sweat and was sore. there are 40 mini games/excersizes in wii fit. The Wii Balance Board supports up to 330 lbs in the US. so if your a little too big for it you might want to run then get on the wii fit. Overall i give it 8/10 very fun! go get it!
